She has taught primitive firing techniques in Malaysia and Europe and has exhibited widely throughout New Zealand. “The alchemy is always a magical combination of the elements” she says which make these firings so exciting.

Helen’s elegant clay sculptures are on display and for sale through her studio, in the Quarry Co-op Shop and also around the Quarry Site as part of the Rust Ramble.

Helen BownessHelen has the amazing ability to plan an image and construct it with tiny fragments of tile no bigger than a ten cent coin.  She develops recognisable imagery in her own artistic style and high calibre mosaic techniques.  Her works range in scale from small pieces to very large scale table top sized works, all  of which she utilises the same small tile pieces creating collages of colour and shade to make her beautiful and charismatic designs.  All of Helen’s works can be displayed both indoors and out. She has tutoring experience and is open to commission work so if you are looking for an alternative to pencil portraits or common signage come and visit her studio or she can be contacted through the Quarry office.
